Legal Lens is the trading name of John Barwell, operating as a sole trader. It is not a limited company, a firm of solicitors, or authorised or regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.
Legal Lens is therefore not subject to the SRA Standards and Regulations. It nevertheless operates according to its published professional standards, maintains professional indemnity insurance, and does not undertake reserved legal activities — including the conduct of litigation and rights of audience — or imply regulatory authorisation it does not have.
Founded from experience of the system
Legal Lens was founded in 2024 by John Barwell, whose personal experiences with the legal system highlighted gaps in accessible professional knowledge. This spurred the creation of a platform dedicated to providing comprehensive legal insights and practical resources for all.
Core themes across our work
- Exploring legal trends
- What is changing in tribunal and court procedure, and what it means for people representing themselves.
- Navigating ethical challenges
- Where regulation and professional conduct fall short of the people they exist to protect.
- In-depth law analysis
- Dated, sourced analysis of judgments, rules and reforms, written to be checked.
- Documenting legal insights
- Plain-English explanations of complex procedure, kept free and kept current.
The suite, delivered and building
Alongside the five working tools, three of the four resources below are live today; the fourth is in development.
Trusted directory
Services listed because I recommend them, with the recommender named on every entry: a recommendation, not a vetting badge.
Peer support network
Connecting users for mutual guidance, shared experiences, and community-led advocacy.
Giles — chatbot assistance
Plain-English guidance on common legal questions: guidance, not legal advice.
Document-building tools
Customisable legal templates, checklists, and document-building portals — in development.
Facing a tribunal, or need strategic guidance?
